Claudette Perrin, Jean Lafitte Tourist Office
Jean Lafitte, Louisiana
We had heard from several people that Lafitte, Louisiana was hard hit by the oil spill and on our last day in the Gulf Coast we decided to make our way down. Right off the freeway and fearing we were lost we were fortunate to spot the local tourism center. We were immediately greeted by Claudette Perrin, the town historian and curator of the center. An artist and native of Jean Lafitte, Claudette proudly explained the history of the town, a small Cajun village which stretches across Bayou Barataria and is named after the famed pirate Jean LaFitte. In her interview she shared with us her concern and fear for how the oil spill has impacted her beloved town and her husband, a commercial fisherman.
